The JCB solution to all your at home needs
The brief
The challenge with this project was firstly to design a drill for the ‘new user’ market. This is because even since the pandemic there have been more and more people getting into DIY projects at home, in turn creating a larger demand for simple and intuitive tools.
Another key aspect was to choose a brand, and design this drill for said brand. This should include all key design features and aesthetics of the brand. I chose JCB as I believe this particular market is an area where they are not flooded with options as they tend to be designed for more practiced and experienced users. My design journey began with creating three unique concepts as seen below…
N.B. Throughout this project we were tasked with displaying our ability to do 2D rendering
The choice was made to continue with ‘Concept One’ as it was a very striking option also it felt as if it was the most appropriate for the JCB brand.
The key developments that were required were to then implement a more user friendly feel to the design and introduce a potential detachable handle (inspiration from ‘Concept Three’). The final developed design can be seen below…
